Getting Closer To Year-End

We are starting to get closer to the end of 2016 and to start off the New Year 2017. I don't have any specific reasons for saying this but it just seems to me that people are in a much better mood this year than in the past few years. This could well be because the unemployment rate has dropped significantly in this area in the same time as last year. I just keep hoping that it continues to drop although it just seemed to increase a little bit in the last time frame:

"Windsor’s unemployment jumped slightly last month but continues to be better than the provincial and national average, says Statistics Canada.

According to the most recent labour force survey, the November unemployment rate in Windsor was 5.7 per cent — up slightly from 5.3 per cent in October.

The Ontario average was 6.4 per cent in November and 6.6 per cent in October.

Nationally, the unemployment rate fell to 6.9 per cent from seven per cent in October." (Dylan Kristy, Windsor Star, December 2, 2016)

I've seen some interesting news stories over the past little while and thought that I would let you know about some of them.

MILLIONAIRES DOING WELL IN CANADA

Instead of being unemployed, it appears that many Canadians are starting to become millionaires! Now isn't that something nice to accomplish in this country. Here are some interesting statistics for you to take a look at:

"Credit Suisse global wealth ranking says there are 1.1 million Canadians worth $1M US

About 25,000 Canadians became millionaires in the past year, but more than 500,000 more can expect to fall into that category in the next five years, according to a report released Friday by Credit Suisse.

In its seventh annual report on global wealth levels, the Swiss Bank said there are currently 1,117,000 millionaires in Canada, which the bank defines as someone worth $1 million US when you add up all assets and subtract debts.

That means Canada is home to about three per cent of all of the world's millionaires — eighth overall on a list that's very top heavy as the U.S. is home to 41 per cent of them." (CBC, November 26, 2016)

Unfortunately, the article did not tell us how people made so much money or where they work to do so.  I wonder if those numbers have gotten worse because of the problems in the oil industry where so many people have lost their jobs.  Presumably, we will find that out a year from now.

WILL WE START SEEING MORE TOLL ROADS

I'm afraid that the answer will be "Yes." There is no doubt in my mind that Governments who have the power over roads will start imposing tolls on them. Billions of dollars will be needed not only to build new ones but to keep on repairing the older ones. Toll money will help in doing so.

We in Windsor/Detroit already have "international" toll roads for traveling between the 2 countries. The Detroit River Tunnel Road is under the River while the other, the Ambassador Bridge, was built over the River. Who knows, although I doubt it, we may well get another border crossing over the River at a cost of around $4 billion or more if a new bridge is ever allowed to be built. I can't imagine what the "tolls" would be for that border crossing!

I expect that if certain action is taken in Toronto then we can expect to see tolls on many roadways that have been built or which may well be built subsequently in Canada. Here is a very interesting article that I saw in a recent media presentation on the subject:

"Toronto tolls may pave the way for road pricing in Metro Vancouver

With the idea of tolls now on the table in Toronto, it may provide the push some politicians have been looking for to introduce road pricing in Metro Vancouver.

“I think many regions around the world are looking to variable pricing for the transportation system, including roads, based on peak demand,” says Lawrence Frank, a sustainable transportation professor at the University of British Columbia. “Variable road pricing real time information is now possible, we have the technology to do it, and we should get on it.”

In Toronto, Mayor John Tory announced the city is planning to impose tolls on two major highways to pay for transportation improvements and help ease congestion, thought to be the first in Canada on expressways cutting through a downtown core." (Mike Lloyd, News 1130, November 25, 2016)

I have to admit that I was shocked that so many people in Toronto are supposedly in favour in having tolls for the roads in Toronto. I just could not believe it:

"Toronto divided on road tolls, poll finds

How polarizing is the idea of tolling Toronto’s roads? According to a new poll, the city’s electorate is split right down the middle on the issue.

The poll by Forum Research Inc. was conducted on Thursday evening, hours after Mayor John Tory threw his support behind a controversial plan to implement road tolls on the Gardiner Expressway and Don Valley Parkway.

It found that 46 per cent of voters approve of road tolls, while 45 per cent disapprove. Nine per cent didn’t know." ( Nov. 26, 2016)

I found these statistics quite interesting but not surprising either:

"Support for road tolls was lowest among respondents making less than $20,000 a year, 50 per cent of whom disapproved of the idea. It had majority support (56 per cent) among those earning incomes between $40,000 and $60,000, as well as the wealthiest respondents."

Here's something else that did not surprise me and makes me question the introduction to the story that suggests that drivers are in favour of tolls:

"Perhaps unsurprisingly, 60 per cent of voters who use a private vehicle to commute said they disapproved of tolls. Half of those who commute by public transit supported the idea, while 81 per cent of those who bike and 63 per cent of those who walk supported the plan."

It will be interesting to see what happens over the next little while.

WHAT IS POVERTY COSTING US

I am not sure that anyone really knows how much money it costs to help those who are suffering in poverty. The number of people involved is so extremely high as well. There are all kinds of costs that are being paid by Governments to help out those people who require assistance. Here is one story that you may find interesting which helps explain what those costs include:

"Poverty is costing Toronto an estimated $4.5 billion to $5.5 billion a year, according to a new report released Monday.

The Cost of Poverty in Toronto, a report by social policy expert John Stapleton and research consultants Alexa Briggs and Celia Lee, says the numbers reflect the cost of lost opportunity. The report itself examines what the authors call the price of inaction.

"These numbers estimate what poverty costs Toronto in the justice system, the health system, and tax revenues, both now and in future generations," the report says.

"They tell us that inaction comes at a cost...

It notes that people living in poverty pay less in taxes, are more likely to be unemployed or underemployed, consume more services, have higher health costs, incur costs related to the justice system and are more likely to have children who will live in poverty as adults." (CBC News November 28, 2016)

The way that they arrive at the numbers is very interesting:

"The report's authors say they arrived at the $4.5 billion to $5.5 billion figure by adding individual items that include:

--cost of crime at $436 million;
--cost of public health at $730 million;
--hospital days at $23.7 million;
--lost income at $2.9 billion to $4 billion;
--foregone taxes at $322 million to $345 million."

Another interesting number that I saw in a Toronto Star article on the subject that is quite startling to me is that 265,000 families are living on low incomes in that area.

TORONTO IS CHANGING TOO

So you think that Toronto is struggling with so many families living in low income, right. If so, are you ever wrong at least with respect to this story. Many people who live there will no longer own their premises:

"If Toronto & Vancouver Are ‘Superstar Cities,' Get Ready To Rent

Home ownership is a big deal in Canada, but as housing becomes more scarce and expensive in Toronto and Vancouver, many residents of those cities will give up dreams of homeownership — whether by choice or not.

In fact, a decade from now, the stigma surrounding renting will have disappeared in Toronto, says Paul Smetanin, CEO of the Canadian Centre for Economic Analysis...

But in these “superstar” cities, land prices have either moved far out of range of affordability for regular earners, or have always been out of range, and in today’s hot real estate markets, renting is becoming more common.

The home ownership rate in London, for example, is just half the rate in Toronto — 36.4 per cent. (It peaked about 15 years ago, at around 42 per cent.)...

“We’re really talking about giving people the choice between being able to rent a beautiful home or being able to buy one,” he added. “It’s a very different model to the one we’re used to.” (Daniel Tencer The Huffington Post Canada November 29, 2016)

Deck The Halls With Dell Devices

The holiday season is coming up very shortly. It just seems that this year people seem to be very optimistic about what is happening especially in relation to the jobs that they have now or a job that they expect to get shortly. When one looks at the number of people who are now working in our area, things are starting to look pretty good compared with previous years.

What this may mean is that people who are working now or expecting to be working shortly want to get some nice presents for the important people in their lives whether it is their spouse, children or some other relative in their family or some friends they have made. After all, they may well be feeling much happier about their future because of the way they have been treated and want to share their happiness with the others.

It would not surprise me at all if some people might be prepared to spend a few extra dollars to purchase some better items for relatives and friends to help them out with gifts not just for the holiday period but also for the time frame afterward.  They might well be prepared to help buy them items that they may need for their job today or the job that they hope to get soon.  Why not get them something that they can operate in their homes as well that are helpful to them. Of course, some people may well be looking for some especially nice gifts for their children also.  Sure the kids need products that help them enjoy their lives to play happier but also there may be the need to buy the products that will help them with their school activities.

I have done this before and thought I would do it again. Let me suggest that some people may want spend money to buy a computer or other product for the person who they think may need one. If that is you, dear reader, who is looking to purchase such an item, then take a look at some of these products that are manufactured and sold by Dell. There are many others products of course that are offered by Dell but here are just some for you to take a look at now.

Just go to the Dell Website online http://www.dell.com/en-ca/  and contact them for any assistance that you may require and to help you purchase one of their products.

Here are some of their products that you may find interesting.  Just so you know, the pricing I was given and set out may not be the price today, believe it or not, given how competitive the market is. Pricing just seems to change so quickly these days especially around the holiday times.

No worries though. I posted that pricing so you would have an idea whether you should consider buying the product or not and should obviously check out the final pricing before you make a buying decision.  Of course as well, the prices are for the base price of the product only and there are extra charges for many extra items one chooses to buy such as but not limited to additional upgrades desired, government costs including taxes, duties and levies, delivery fees and so on that will increase the price. Make sure that you have a good idea of what the actual price is of your final item to be purchased before you make a decision by going to the Dell website to buy that product:

It Is Approaching That Day Again

I will tell you a little bit about my new life that I am now living. It is certainly not the same as I have lived before. I have had quite an experience over the last little while which has impacted me so significantly and also in a manner that is so positive for someone who has suffered as much as I have.  My life now with my family is so wonderful that it is just amazing and it is getting even better.

If you have been a reader of my articles on here for a relatively long period of time, then you will have an understanding about what I have gone through. If you are a "newcomer" here, then you may not know exactly how I have lived and why. I don't wish to do a whole long article again about what has happened to me and would suggest that all that needs to be done is go back and read some of the articles I have written before on here over the past 2 years about what I have experienced.

Notwithstanding what I just wrote, I do need to share a little bit about what happened to me so that you will understand where I am going now.  I am going to be very quick about it as well.

As you know now, just on the day before New Year's in 2014 and then on January 1, 2015 I was very ill and wound up in hospital with people there who really did not know what my medical problem was. Fortunately, the doctor in Emergency on New Year's Day had the right view about what my illness was so that they literally started treating me the right way probably a day or 2 before I would have died. His view was confirmed after sending my records to a hospital in Toronto.

For about a month or so after I returned home, I was under intense care and still have very little actual knowledge of how I was treated for that time. However, I was treated well and fortunately was able to start coming back to life. For months afterwards, I still had to stay in bed to recover and then started getting out of bed and started getting back to normal life.  We sold our house in Windsor and bought a magnificent new residence in Tecumseh.

I have written a lot about my visits to doctors, the excellent medical care I was given and how a lot of my physical and mental problems have been treated so well. In addition, I have talked about some of the illnesses I have had so that others who may suffer something similar will understand what they should do about it.  To be direct, my illness is not known by very many people so I am hoping that what you are reading may one day be helpful if you suffer something similar, dear reader.

So where am I now? I have been very fortunate. My recovery has been quite amazing and I am still getting better and better every day. While I can never make a complete recovery, it would seem that I am doing a lot better than expected. To be honest, I think even my own doctors are surprised by my good recovery since many people do not always do all that well. Right now, as an example, I am doing quite a bit from an exercise perspective every single day to keep up my medical health. My wife is making sure that the foods I am eating at home every day are beneficial and in the proper quantity. My children help me out in a lot of activities to help make my life so much easier.  I have met many of my friends from the past who have been so positive when we speak to tell me how happy they are that I am feeling better. Moreover, I have made so many new friends who live in my neighbourhood also. They are just such great people because we make sure that everything around us is looked after and that we are feeling well.

I will be starting shortly my third year after the terrible illness that hit me. I did go through a lot to get at where I am at now. Notwithstanding how much I have done up until now, and no matter how well it may appear to be, from what I understand, I am still relatively at an early stage of my recovery. There is a lot more for me to do to get even better because, after all, my objective is to have a much longer and healthier life.  I am here also to make sure that my family members do well after how much they have done for me.

Notwithstanding how well I have been doing up until now, I must admit that, when this month of December approached, I started getting a little bit nervous. I am sure you understand why. Nevertheless, I am certainly not going to have a negative feeling at all when the end of December comes. I will tell you, dear reader, that I no longer will be upset remembering how close I came to the end of my life. Rather, I will look at it as the beginning of my "new life."  I am here to make sure that my family does well because of how they have treated me during such a difficult time for all of us. I want to make sure that I am a good friend of the people I have known before and those whom I have recently met.

I do have to say that I wonder what will happen to me in the future. Notwithstanding my age, I do like to work. However, I do not ever intend to get involved in a 9-to-5 job again or even to start my own business. It really is not something that interests me. My view is different. I do not mind at all helping out someone if they need assistance but only on a temporary basis. Heck, if I come up with a great idea about a new business, I do not mind trying to find a person to do it and helping out a bit when they start out.

I do have a life that likes doing new things regardless of age. I would like to help out people who are positive in what they are trying to achieve. I think I have some ideas based on everything I have done in my many years to help out those who are just starting something new in their life. Moreover, I am quite prepared to be positive with these people about the good things they are trying to do and am not afraid to warn them not to do some of the negative activities that they might be doing even if they, themselves, do not know how bad it might be.

I am especially here to help out my children achieve their positive goals in their lives. We have talked about how I can help them and I intend to do so.

Of course, there is my wife to whom I owe everything that I have achieved since I have recovered from my illness. Her life with me when I have been so ill has been just as magnificent as it always has been . What she has accomplished since I have been so ill is so wonderful.  I have never heard her to be negative about anything no matter how difficult it was for looking after everyone when I was so ill. She was always completely positive in helping me out no matter how hard it was in any particular situation.

I am looking forward to the start of my third year of my new life. My new life will be just fabulous. I absolutely know it!

An Unbelievable Event For Me

It really is fun writing articles for my own personal Website "TecumsehCityBlog" that I can post and hope that many people read.  I know that I do not write as many articles as I did before but my life is different now.  Accordingly, I have had to adjust.

As well, I have to state that the writings are somewhat different these days compared with what I wrote before. Of course, a lot of the articles today are very similar to my past approach when I was dealing with "businesslike" articles on my old website. However, a good number of them are not the same at all now. They are a lot more personal in nature than before that allow me, dear reader, to tell you a lot about my life in a manner that I have not done previously.

My whole life seems different as well these days. I don't mind sharing information about myself in a manner that I have not done before. I guess I just want you to know more about me because I think it may help you in dealing with some of the matters in your life. For the better, I trust!

Let me give you one example of how my life has changed in a manner that seems very significant to me. All of a sudden in this incident, I remembered what I did about 50 years ago because of something that just recently had an influence on my life.  To be direct, I was just so amazed about what took place because I have no real explanation for it happening at all. I am just so pleased though that it did.

I happened to be on the Internet just doing some reading recently and came across a story dealing with a Judge in Ontario. The Judge's name was Russell Otter.

The story was a very interesting one in the University of Toronto Faculty of Law Newsroom:

"The Honourable Justice Russell J. Otter '70 has become the first Canadian to be selected president of the American Judges Association. The AJA is the largest judges association in the United States, with more than 2,000 members, of whom approximately 15 per cent are Canadians.

Justice Otter became a provincial court judge in July 1993, currently sitting at Scarborough Courts.  He was elected president of the Ontario Conference of Judges in 1999.  From 2002-2015, he served as executive director of the Canadian Association of Provincial Court Judges.  The husband and father of two is also a proud grandfather of five, a marathoner and a long-standing volunteer fitness instructor at the YMCA."

That was a rather significant role for the fellow who was the first Canadian appointed to this high position. In reading the story though, I thought that the name was a very familiar one to me although my familiarity was with the name "Russ." Interestingly, I read that his timeframe was exactly similar to mine. He graduated in 1970 from Law School, the same year that I did.

I have to admit when I looked at his photograph I did not recognize him at all. I did some more research into him and found a photo of him from the past. It looked exactly like one of the fellows I knew so well so many years before so that it confirmed that we were in fact classmates! He and I were people who knew each other very well for 3 years because we both were in the same Law School class at exactly the same time.  I have to admit as well that we were terrific friends during those 3 years because our backgrounds were similar. We dealt with each other so much and were great classmates together.

However, our lives changed subsequently because I went overseas for another year for my Master's Degree in Law. To be honest, when I came back, I really did not speak very much at all with him because I had my life that I was dealing with at the time that was obviously different from the one that he was experiencing. We were each doing our own careers. I think that I saw his name on several University of Toronto Law School matters over the years that he was involved in but my own life was so different that I did not participate in them. In fact, I eventually left Toronto to live in Windsor so that I really did not participate in very many U of T events in Toronto.

What it really meant to me is that while we were great friends for 3 years in Law School, our relationship changed so dramatically that we hardly spoke to each other for the next 40+ years. I have to admit that I knew very little of him during that timeframe and was very surprised when I read about his life. I immediately phoned him just so that I could say hello again to my fellow classmate after so many years.

Regretfully, although I had a terrific phone conversation with his secretary-- I think that was her position-- we did not speak with each other in that phone call. He was not in the office but was away on a trip I was told. I must admit that I wondered whether he would ever call me later or whether he would just not bother given our separation for so many years. I was not even sure that he remembered me.

Last Friday, the phone rang in my house. I picked it up and a gentleman asked if he could speak to me. To be honest, I knew exactly who it was! Notwithstanding the almost 50 years, his voice was recognized by me immediately and absolutely as my classmate, Russ Otter! He did not have to identify himself to me at all. While the photographs I saw on him on the Internet made him unrecognizable, the voice did not. Nor, was the way he talked with me different either. He was my classmate that I recognized right away even though almost 50 years had passed!

We talked about ourselves and our history over the last many years for about a half an hour until he had to leave to meet some people with whom he had an appointment. We were so open in our discussions with each other that it seemed that we had never separated. We knew each other so very well during our conversation that it was truly amazing.  He confirmed with me that he still knew a lot about me. I truly was so astounded about how well we got along with each other.

I just wish we had met each other a few weeks earlier because he had just gone through Windsor a little while ago and we could have met when he came here. He told me that he expected to be in the Windsor area about a year from now and hopefully we can meet then. I, of course, told him that we may well need an out-of-town representative to deal with an American Judges Association matter here and, if so, I was hoping that he could be appointed for it.

So there you have it, dear reader.  I am so thrilled with what happened. More importantly, I just can't believe that people who haven't talked to each other for half a century are still such good friends!

Just What's Happening These Days

It is almost 2 years now since I first suffered my weird illness. So very few people suffer from this illness it would appear from what has been diagnosed so far and accordingly, it is so difficult to figure out what it is and then treat it in time before quick death . Fortunately, I lucked out. Although I still have some medical losses of personal actions and have not yet recovered and will never recover 100% of all them, I am doing quite well.  I need to thank once again all of the people who have treated me so well and are continuing to do so.

My life has changed to one that is much different compared with the pre-illness one. I tend now to live a day at a time. It is my objective at the end of every day to solve any problem that has come up during that day and to be able to sleep without any worries at all. Fingers crossed, that has worked out so well that I am so pleased about it.

I look at people differently and hope that they will deal with me in an honest way without trying any tricks. I must admit that I don't give people any chances to try to pull one on me. If I discover that, then I immediately terminate my relationship with that person. My attitude is simple. I want nothing from anyone and I expect them to want nothing from me other than to have a great friendship. Of course, if I believe that they are experiencing a real problem in their life, then I try to get them to explain to me what is going on so that I can provide some assistance to them to help overcome it. Naturally, I tell them that I do not expect anything back from them other than to hear that their problem has been overcome.

I am hopeful that, by reading the articles that I have published here on my Blogsite, you will understand what I have said above and that you will accept what I do online. I especially write articles when I see problems between the parties involved and wonder why it has taken so long and yet, the parties seem completely unable to resolve them.

So let me tell you about a couple of matters that I have looked at recently where I have seen problems to see my thoughts about them.

First, let us examine the Library situation in Essex County with some of the changes coming. How many months has the strike been going on in this area and why? Too many and for reasons that make little sense to me! I have to admit that I really don't understand why that has happened. Just go back and take a look at some of the articles I have written to understand why this situation to me appears so bizarre and what may have to happen now to solve it.  My attitude is that the parties are working together and problems do arise. They ought to identify them right away and resolve them just as quickly. After all, they have a relationship between themselves.

Here is what seems completely ludicrous now but finally may mean the end of this fiasco. It is ludicrous because it seems to me to be the fault of the management especially for this strike to be continuing for so long:

"Both parties will resume bargaining on November 25 with the help of a provincial mediator. This is their first meeting since mid-September, when talks broke off as management maintained the same core position that they held on June 22, three days before the strike started on June 25.

“This is the first meeting we are having in over two months and the first time the employer asked us to resume bargaining,” said Wightman. “We hope to use this opportunity to find solutions and we urge the Library Board to do the same and not come back to dictate pre-determined terms.” (CUPE Website, November 21, 2016)

Our local politicians better hope this happens as well!

Tell me, why was there a need for a border strike at the Blue Water Bridge in Sarnia? I just do not get it. Here is what bothers me about a situation such as this one:

"Blue Water Bridge workers have been without a contract since November 2014

Workers at the Blue Water Bridge voted Wednesday to go on strike if the Federal Bridge Corporation doesn't return to the bargaining table.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) said the previous collective agreement ended Nov. 7, 2014 for 49 union members who work as cleaners and toll collectors, and in the maintenance and currency exchange departments at the crossing between Point Edward and Port Huron."

Seriously, who cares now what the issues really are between Management and the Union in this matter. Do you expect to tell me that for some reason the parties cannot solve whatever their problems are over a two-year period! I just cannot believe that something like this has really happened. I guess the interesting question now is how long the strike will take place and what will ultimately resolve the differences between the parties.

It is a nice US holiday weekend this weekend that is being shared between Canada and United States. It will be interesting to see what kind of a border mess will take place in Sarnia with all of the backups. One can bet as well that we will see many problems in Windsor/Detroit as well as a result of the strike because border crossers will come down here to try to avoid the strike situation in the Sarnia area.

One just has to wonder why it is impossible to solve a two-year problem. Here might be a good reason to be upset about all of this stuff:

"Despite talks breaking off this weekend, Haney said union officials are ready to sit down again for a new round of contract negotiations.

“My phone is on,” he said. “Give me a call. We're ready to go back.”

When asked if the corporation was willing to return to contract talks, Girard said, “We're at the point right now where our main concern is to run the bridge. That's our objective.”

Sigh, can anyone figure this out now!

Blue Water Bridge Strike Update

I thought  that I would post what I have heard about the Bridge border strike that is taking place right now in the Sarnia area at the Blue Water Bridge.  It is after Day #1 of the strike.

It does make it better for the Union people and puts the Government at risk to annoy the border users right now. It could get much worse if the strike lasts a long time if traffic backups get bigger and bigger.

Traffic certainly will not get better over the  next few days as big holidays start in the US and people need to cross the border.  I would guess that border crossing time could take multi-hours.

From a truck business side, there is no doubt that truck users will choose Windsor/Detroit to cross the border rather than take the big backup risk in Sarnia now.  Who knows, that could  mean the truck drivers will like crossing here even when the strike ends.

Here is what I  have  heard so far from the Union  people:

"It went really well today. We know management was scrambling to cover some of the duties of our members.

We had a tremendous amount of union support, and we received tonnes of messages of solidarity from the public.

We will be out tomorrow morning for a strategic picket at the bridge at 7am again."

A warning to Management.  End the strike soon or else it will get really ugly for you from everyone including people in our area too!
