Not So Hot

That is pretty short and sweet for a headline isn’t it, dear reader, but it is true as well. I wrote this a few days ago when we were told that we were to get somewhere between 10 to 15 cm of snow and then flurries over the next several days.

The big part of all of this is that the temperature predictions were so low that some of the days were new records of coldness. I have to admit that I am pleased that my family really did not have to go out and do anything during those few days. In fact, what we did was go out and buy enough food so that we would  not have to do any shopping for a while. That is the way to be prepared!

I had no idea what was really going to happen on that day of snow. All I knew was that the snowstorm was supposed to have started a couple of hours before.  At the time  of writing this, nothing new here but listening to the radio I heard that it was starting already in Detroit.  It  meant it was coming to our area shortly thereafter

That is all that I am going to talk about on this subject. Between now and the time that this article is published, it should be interesting to see what the weather actually is and whether or not our area complies with what the Weather Department is predicting.

GENERAL MOTORS

I thought that I would direct you to a website in Canada that General Motors is using to put forward its position on what they are doing in this country even though they are closing their plant in Oshawa.

Take a look here: https://www.supportingoshawaworkers.ca/site/ca/en/gm-transformation/home.html

No, I do not support their position nor do I support that of the Union in this article. I just wanted to let you know about this website, dear reader, so that you might learn a little bit more on this subject.

Sure, GM will still have 5000 people hired in its employee group after the plant closes. However, what will the consequences be if the plant is still closed down and the employees do not have new jobs in the future. Right now, there seems to be the beginning of some strong opposition to buying GM automobiles in the future. Here are some numbers that have not come out until now which should cause a tremendous amount of concern to everyone if that really does take place. The consequences of these people losing their work would be horrific for this country. As set out in this posting:

Another 23,000 Canadians are employed by GM dealers across Canada.

In other words, dear reader, there are some big issues that need to be resolved immediately or else there could be some horrific positions that we may see whether we want to or not and perhaps sooner than expected.

Do we need to become another “Australia?”

WILL THE LAW STUDENTS FAIL

Of course not. It is part of their student program. However, the five students who are going to be involved may not be viewed very well by certain people who may be opposed to what they are doing. Take for example what Windsor’s Mayor had to say:

Mayor Drew Dilkens, who has a law degree from the University of Windsor, said it’s always exciting for students to get experience. But, he said, “This situation is somewhat ironic in that students in one faculty (law) will be working to represent interests adverse to the City of Windsor and County of Essex and, if successful, would have a negative impact on hundreds of students in other faculties (medicine, nursing, and other health-related programs) who stand to benefit from the construction of this project.” (Anne Jarvis, Windsor Star, January 25, 2019)

What the students are doing is opposing the construction of the new hospital where it is being proposed now by assisting the Citizens for an Accountable Megahospital Planning Process in its position. That approach is not viewed very favorably by those who are in favour of moving the hospital to a new location.

It will be interesting to see what happens as this process moves forward. It will also be interesting to see what happens to Associate Dean Gemma Smyth, whose husband is the Dean, who supports the position of the five students.

METROPOLITAN WINDSOR

As I am sure that you will know, that will probably be the name for the new “City” when Windsor and all of its suburban neighbour towns join together, or rather may be joined together whether they want to or not. I lived in Toronto when that similar kind of name was set up many years ago when all of the various municipalities in the area formed the new entity.

Of course, it is not going to be mentioned right now. All that would do is get everyone really excited, especially those who would be opposed to the joining up. After all, no one has yet been appointed to be head of the new Organization. Accordingly, one can expect a whole bunch of these kinds of re-organizations to take place:

The funding will allow for the creation of an intercommunity bus service that will link the communities of Leamington, Kingsville, Essex and Windsor.

The preliminary concept is to have the new transit route operate Monday to Friday, from Leamington through Kingsville, to Windsor/St. Clair College, with a stop in Essex.” (Liz Thorne, WindsoriteDOTCA, January 25, 2019)

Just watch what will happen next.
